All the while, Mariah has been a fierce advocate for public health, conservation, and other progressive policies.While in Washington, Mariah continued to help families and their pets by working nights and weekends at an emergency veterinary hospital and volunteered at the local wildlife clinic.When the Republicans took over Congress, Mariah moved into non-profit government affairs, leveraging their skills and experience to work across party lines while advocating for public health, conservation, and national security.When the Trump administration directly opposed their work and congressional Republicans followed suit, Mariah and their fiancé, Josh, decided to come home to Massachusetts to fight them another way.

A majority of Thursday night’s discussion concerned the issue of affordability in the state. As Rep. Nguyen said, “People cannot begin to tackle the larger issues of politics if they cannot put food on the table or keep a roof over their heads.” Signs of division between the candidates began to manifest as candidates argued over the root cause of this issue of affordability. Candidates wrestled with how much responsibility the Trump Administration bears over the affordability crisis: “Tariffs are shoring up all of our household costs,” said Belsito. “They are hamstringing every single one of us.” Other candidates diverged stating that the issues of affordability in Massachusetts have existed long before the Trump Administration. All candidates shared concern over the rising number of individuals in the state that are being priced out of the housing market. Progressive candidates at the debate shifted the focus away from the federal level and spoke to solutions within the state: “It’s quite simple to me,” said Andres-Beck. “We need to build more housing. Other candidates rightfully point out that capitalism is the problem but plan to solve it with more capitalism.”Fellow progressive Belsito resumed focus on the federal government and the misuse of American tax dollars: “You cannot try and tell me we don’t have the money we need for our towns while our country spends billions in wars overseas.” Candidates spent significant time discussing international conflict as the war in Iran loomed in the background. Yet again, stark lines were drawn between candidates. Beccia resounded that: “The Trump approach is the largest issue on the international stage. We are laughing stocks currently. How the administration has handled international affairs without congressional consent.”Beccia went on to strike a moderate tone on international issues: “I believe that Israel is an important ally to the US, but I believe in a two-state solution, and that there is a true humanitarian crisis in Gaza. I believe we need to prevent Iran from having access to nuclear weapons, but our action needs to be approved by congress. We cannot continue to be governed by executive order.”Other candidates struck a different tone: “We must reestablish our leadership on the international stage,” said Lancaster. “Both Biden and Trump have been found to be in gross violation of the Leahy Laws by continuing to fund Israel’s human rights abuses. We must revoke the 2002 authorization made under the Bush administration, which this funding of atrocity is built upon.”“As an American and as a mother I am embarrassed,” said Belsito. “We are watching a genocide play out in live time on our Instagram feeds. I am done with conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. To the Jewish people in our community, you have an ally in me, and I will protect you, just as I will protect our Muslim neighbors and our Christian neighbors.”Andres-Beck realigned the conversation: “We aren’t even talking about how we are blocking oil from entering Cuba and essentially cut off electricity to those in the country, because it is the third major world conflict we are embroiled in.” Rep. Nguyen reinforced her fellow candidates points about the need to recognize the conflict in Gaza as a genocide and the US Government’s complicity in human rights abuses across the globe adding, “Congress is not using all the tools at its disposal to combat this administration.”This led to the candidates debating the role bipartisanship should play in their platform. Koh reasserted his position as an “aggressive and ambitious” fighter against the Trump agenda, while stressing the need for bipartisanship in said fight: “I am willing to work with anyone who is willing to work with me,” he said. This brought the debate to its most pointed criticism as Belsito commented on the funding of Koh’s campaign by his father, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health, Howard Koh.Koh deflected this criticism by stating that attacking his family was “far over the line.” All candidates agreed that representation in government was affected by the hurdles of wealth and resources. Progressive candidates Belsito, Lancaster and Nguyen utilized this distinction in funding to set themselves apart from candidates Koh and Beccia, who represented a class of political candidates alienated from the middle class. Lancaster continued to differentiate herself from the other candidates, citing her experience as a Congressional aide, stating that, as the only candidate with congressional experience, she has the tools to build a coalition as a freshman representative; a claim that was disputed by Koh who served as a White House aide in the Biden administration. “Democrats are angry. They have every right to be, but we need to move beyond the message of just fighting Trump,” said Beccia, stating the need to reach across the aisle in order to deliver for American people. Andres-Beck concluded the conversation on bipartisanship by speaking to their experience as a transgender American, citing how trans people’s existence has become a political positioning tool: “We believe people when they tell us who they are,” they said. “We believe in redemption but we also believe in accountability.”Andres-Beck priority on accountability came into focus during the lightning round of the debate; when asked if ICE should continue to exist they gave the simple answer: “No, and they should be prosecuted.”The lightning round concluded the night, bringing levity to the evening, as all six candidates attempted to resonate with voters on less controversial issues like best Massachusetts sports team and best place to eat in the district. SALEM — If you blinked, 2020 was so back at Salem State University.The six Democrats competing to replace US Representative Seth Moulton in the Sixth Congressional District faced off at a candidate forum Wednesday, offering takes on voters’ economic concerns, foreign affairs, healthcare, and climate policy.The 90-minute event was reminiscent of the Democratic presidential contest in 2020, when a bevy of candidates were similarly testing Democratic messages to stand out as the party’s best option to battle President Trump and his allies.Wednesday’s debate offered candidates an opportunity to try to break away from a crowded field ahead of the Sept. 1 primary.The candidates include Bethany Andres-Beck, a Middleton software engineer; John Beccia, a Lynnfield businessman; Jamie Belsito, the Topsfield town moderator; Dan Koh, a former White House official from Andover; Mariah Lancaster, a former federal worker of Salem; and state Representative Tram Nguyen of Andover.Here’s what to know from the rare one-on-one-on-one-on-one-on-one-on-one forum:<h4>‘I agree’ was the refrain of the night — especially on affordability</h4>Candidates offered similar, if not identical, messages in different fonts throughout the night, making it feel more like a collaborative policy discussion than a contentious debate.Nowhere was that more prevalent than on issues around affordability, the cost of living, and the economy, phrases collectively mentioned more than 50 times.“In traveling across the 39 towns and cities, the No. 1 issue that we hear from folks is affordability,” Nguyen said. “People are not going to worry about other things — they cannot worry about other things — if they cannot put food on the table."Or as put by Beccia: “Affordability is an issue, it is not just a slogan.”Proposed solutions included strengthening worker protections (Nguyen), pushing middle-class tax relief (Beccia), reining in housing and child care costs (Koh), breaking up monopolies (Lancaster), reversing Trump’s tariffs (Belsito), and changing federal policy to address education and energy prices (Andres-Beck).All of the candidates, separately, said they supported abolishing federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, implementing some form of universal health care, and regulating artificial intelligence.That said, there were a few points of disagreement.When asked whether they planned to support Senator Ed Markey or Moulton in the party’s US Senate primary, four out of six named Markey. Koh, however, said he was “one of the 50 percent undecided,” and Beccia said he would “abstain” from answering.<h4>The biggest point of contention? Cash.</h4>The debate stayed civil — for the most part. That is, until a few candidates took swipes at their rivals’ humongous cash hauls and insider connections.Koh has far out-raised the field, pulling in $3.5 million by the end of March.Beccia has put $2 million of his own money into his campaign, making him one of Massachusetts’ biggest self-funders in recent years. He indirectly took aim at Koh’s Washington experience.“We’re sending insiders to DC with people who just aren’t focused on the right things,” Beccia said. “We need to reform the system from top to bottom. Obviously, we’ve got to take the money out of politics.”Belsito then interjected: “You know the system’s broken when you have $2 million of your own dollars to self-fund a campaign,” drawing applause from the crowd.Beccia later said he’s “been very blessed” and that he was “betting on myself” but still supported system reforms.Belsito, who called the race an example of “class warfare,” also referenced Koh’s father, Howard Koh, who served as a public health official in the Obama administration, while saying her father, a floor layer, “can’t call anybody to help me in Congress.”“Respectfully, I think we should leave parents out of this conversation,” Koh responded.“I don’t have, and the majority on the stage do not have, access to the wealth that you do to be running for this race, and that is part of the problem of what this race has presented,” Belsito said.<h4>Candidates offered an array of anti-Trump messages</h4>All six candidates invoked Trump’s name dozens of times as they criticized his administration’s tariffs and handling of global conflicts, among other things.But the group, in agreement that Democrats are “angry” and have an opportunity to “define the future” of their party, offered differing visions on the best resume to take on his administration.Those in the group with federal government experience — Koh, Belsito, and Lancaster — held up their prior work in Washington as evidence that they understand how the federal system works. Nguyen leaned on her experience in state government. And Andres-Beck and Beccia emphasized that their experiences in science and business, respectively, would bring fresh, outside perspectives to Capitol Hill.They also disagreed on how much they would need to work across the aisle.“Now is not the time to play patty-cake with MAGA,” said Koh, who pitched perhaps the most direct anti-Trump platform of the evening.Beccia, at another point, said it’s important to “find common ground” to “get things done” while discussing his business background — prompting a retort from Andres-Beck.“I don’t understand how you can call for revolution on the one hand, and then say you expect bipartisan cooperation with people currently in power on the other,” Andres-Beck said.The discussion was a nod to the deep anti-Trump sentiment in Massachusetts, a state that hasn’t elected a Republican to the US House in the last three decades. SALEM — Dan Koh kept his family close all night — his 5- and 3-year-old children, his immigrant father, named again and again as the reason he was in the race. Then Jamie Belsito decided his money was fair game too, and a debate that had run on near-total agreement finally cracked open.For most of the 90 minutes Wednesday at Salem State University, the six Democrats competing to succeed U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton had echoed one another on nearly everything. The break came over campaign cash.Most people, Belsito said, do not have “access to the wealth that you do” — and the room turned with her.“For you to call out my family in this debate is something that is way past the line,” Koh said.Belsito did not retreat. “Your father’s got a phenomenal job,” she told him.Mariah Lancaster cut in. “Why do you talk about your kids on this stage?” she asked.Koh, who had invoked his children all evening, said only that he was “proud to be a father.”The forum was hosted by the Frederick E. I wish I knew,” he said. He pitched what he called a “no more agenda”: $10-a-day child care, $25,000 in down-payment help, and caps on what families pay for rent and utilities, a package he said would save a typical district resident $23,000 a year, paid for by reversing tax cuts he attributed to Elon Musk. He said the administration had cut 40% of the federal affordable-housing budget, though he did not give the dollar total the figure came from.Beccia put the cost of the president’s tariffs at $1,700 a year for the average family.Housing exposed a sharper split in approach.
