Keep Money in Our Pockets

“The affordability crisis isn't an accident: it's the result of corporate monopolies, stagnant wages, and decades of policies that put profits over people. Congress must act now.” –Mariah

Housing is the biggest monthly expense for most families, and corporate landlords are driving rents into the stratosphere while the cost of groceries, utilities, and healthcare keeps climbing. Mariah will take on the root causes: corporate monopoly power, dark money, and a tax code rigged to benefit the ultra-wealthy.

To bring down costs, we must:

  • Make massive federal investments in affordable housing, fully fund Section 8 vouchers, and repeal the Faircloth Amendment to allow new public housing construction

  • Require private equity and hedge funds to divest from single-family homes on a five-year timeline

  • Establish First Home Savings Accounts (FHSAs), tax-free savings for first-time buyers and make rent partially tax-deductible

  • Break up agriculture giants and end all subsidies to corporate agriculture

  • Enforce antitrust law against monopolies in food, healthcare, energy, and consumer goods

  • Ban dynamic pricing for groceries, concert tickets, and airfare, and require all in-store items to have a physical price tag

  • Raise the federal minimum wage to at least $25/hour, indexed to inflation and cost of living, and eliminate subminimum wages for tipped workers and workers with disabilities

  • Cap childcare costs at 7% of family income, invest in universal childcare, and increase FSA/HSA limits for dependent care

  • Pass a graduated wealth tax and raise the marginal tax rate on income exceeding $100 million

  • Legalize and heavily tax recreational marijuana at the federal level, and reinvest revenue in communities harmed by the “War on Drugs”
